Marketing and communications skills are used throughout business and government sectors in Australia, as both the domain of specialists within an organisation or skills that form part of the competency set for specific roles. As the peak representative body for the marketing profession in Australia, the introduction of the AMI Professional Year Reference Group will provide a professional year transition for new graduates entering the work force.
By establishing the AMI Professional Year Industry Reference Group , AMI will ensure that the requirements of business and government are central to the necessary skills that are required going forward. AMI has appointed John Clay as the Inaugural Chair of the AMI Professional Year Industry Reference Group . Coming from an professional Marketing background, John has considerable experience in this domain, having held senior roles in the corporate sector including Telstra, BT, URS and with Arup. For the last 8 years John was a member of Arup’s Australasia executive team and was responsible for marketing, communications, and client engagement across the region; in addition to being the functional Skills practice leader for Arup worldwide.
“I recollect one of my MBA lecturers outlining “You need a good accountant and lawyer to help you run your business, but its marketing expertise that helps you win business and deliver a great customer experience. Well there are over 250,000 marketing and communications professionals working in Australia with thousands of new graduates entering the profession each year. Future growth is strong; and wages and employment are higher than the national average, according to joboutlook.gov. The future looks good for our profession. Marketing and Communication skills are used in every organisation, and we need to make sure that we keep up to date with what industry and government require. Enabling students to be work ready and to give recognition to working practitioners, will lift skills and competency across the board,” commented John Clay.
